Chukotka's Struggle To Preserve Its Whale-Hunting Livelihood
Arctic Survival (2004): Without whale meat, the people of Chukotka risk starvation. They're angry that the IWC will only let them hunt by traditional methods.
For downloads and more information visit http://www.journeyman.tv/17637/short-films/arctic-survival.html
The Russian region of Chukotka is one of the most isolated places in the world. In winter, the average temperature is --30ºc and people survive on less than $10 a month. They depend on whale meat as their main food source. "If they prohibit us from getting this meat, we will simply die out," states one local. But the International Whaling Commission will only allow them to hunt if they use traditional methods like hand thrown harpoons. And that's a ruling the hunters believe is placing them in danger. THE WHALE HUNTERS
This story takes us seven miles off the coast of North America’s northern-most settlement and out onto the arctic ice shelf with a family of whale hunters at the top of the world.
Here, above the Arctic Circle, men paddling sealskin boats hunt a 60-ton animal. Until recently, the bowhead whale they stalked was an utter mystery to modern science.
Now, with the help of Inupiat insight, bowhead whales are thriving but the traditional hunt and a 6000-year-old way of life are endangered. Because as the arctic ice disappears, the Inupiats of Barrow face greater peril than ever before.
This is the story of an Eskimo community’s unlikely & amazing collaboration with western scientists in one of the most remote places on earth, and of one family’s struggle to adapt and survive in a land that is lit...

We humans will go to extraordinary lengths to save a single whale. But how many of us would be willing to put our lives on the line to die for one? In 2006, Liz Hayes met some very radical conservationists who say they're prepared to do just that. "The grey whale is dangerous and very aggressive when hunted," states official Valentin Ilyashenko. The walrus skin boats they're meant to use fall apart too easily and whales are too heavy to drag ashore by hand. Hunters are frustrated that people with no understanding of their lifestyle can have such a large impact on their lives.

We humans will go to extraordinary lengths to save a single whale. Think of all the times we've come to the rescue when they're in trouble on our beaches, and look at the crowds of whale-watchers who pay good money for just a glimpse. But how many of us would be willing to put our lives on the line to die for one? In 2006, Liz Hayes met some very radical conservationists who say they're prepared to do just that. Their mission is to destroy the Japanese whaling industry - and if humans have to be sacrificed, so be it.

During whaling season, crew members spend their days watching the icy Arctic water for the right moment to strike. It will take courage and skill to achieve their mission, and they must avoid desperately hungry polar bears along the way. But in the long moments they stand on the ice, protected from the wind inside a fur-lined parka, a timeless gratitude develops. In those moments, the patient act of waiting transforms into a prayer for the whale. Anaiyyun: Prayer for the Whale, from filmmaker Kiliii Yüyan, tells the story of an Inupiat whaling crew that hunts where the vast plain of ice meets the waters of the Arctic Ocean.

The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. We look for work that affirms National Geographic's belief in the power of science, exploration, and storytelling to change the world. The filmmakers created the content presented, and the opinions expressed are their own, not those of National Geographic Partners.

🥒 ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.
